{"id":3431,"date":"2024-10-01T10:36:55","date_gmt":"2024-10-01T15:36:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/campdeerpark.org\/?post_type=encyclopedia&#038;p=3431"},"modified":"2025-05-09T13:14:12","modified_gmt":"2025-05-09T18:14:12","slug":"nyc-lmc-district","status":"publish","type":"encyclopedia","link":"https:\/\/campdeerpark.org\/es\/kb\/nyc-lmc-district\/","title":{"rendered":"NYC LMC District"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>NYC LMC District<\/strong> is a regional oversight district of the <a href=\"https:\/\/lmcchurches.org\/2023\/04\/new-york-city-district\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lancaster Mennonite Conference<\/a> (LMC) served by assigned bishops that exists for the fellowship, accountability, and resourcing of spiritual leaders and their communities.  It includes fourteen congregations in Bronx, Brooklyn, Flushing, Manhattan, New York, Queens, and Ridgewood NY; one congregation in New Haven, Connecticut; and twenty-five congregations in the Dominican Republic.  Other leaders who are relationally connected are often invited to participate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The churches of the NYC LMC District who participate in the NYC Mennonite Council are <a href=\"https:\/\/campdeerpark.org\/es\/kb\/owner-churches\/\" target=\"_self\" title=\"Owner Churches are churches that own Camp through their participation in the NYC Council of Mennonite Churches (NYCCMC). As a ministry of these Owner Churches, Camp seeks to serve and strengthen these churches and extend their ministry space as they accomplish their mission. Owner churches may recommend church members as candidates to the Camp Board of Directors, subject to a approval process detailed in the By-laws. In the past, Camp has sought to maintain a majority of board seats held by members of Owner Churches. Owner Churches typically qualify for a discount on all services, events, and programs related to&hellip;\" class=\"encyclopedia\">Owner Churches<\/a> of Camp.  Camp serves these churches according to our <a href=\"https:\/\/campdeerpark.org\/es\/kb\/mission-and-values\/\" target=\"_self\" title=\"Camp Deerpark is a ministry of the New York City Mennonite Churches &ndash; a community of Christ where children, youth, and families from all cultures are welcomed to fellowship together in the serenity of God&rsquo;s creation. As an outreach of 18 New York City Mennonite Churches, Camp Deerpark stands alone as a camping ministry owned by and dedicated to serving inner-city Mennonites. The camp offers people of all ages, races, and backgrounds the opportunity to enjoy Christian camping at a reasonable price. Camp offers retreats to churches, youth groups, and ministries year round in a lodge, cabins, and motels and hosts 5 weeks of Summer Camp in July and August. The Camp is located on Grounds composed of 395 acres with spacious lawns and mountain forest outside the village of Westbrookville in the Town of Deerpark in the Shawangunk Mountains in Orange County NY. Camp Deerpark is owned by the New York City Mennonite Churches and our mission is to serve those churches.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Bishops<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Bishop Moises Angustia: Spanish-speaking congregations<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bishop Nicolas Angustia: Spanish-speaking congregations<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bishop Hyacinth Stevens: English-speaking congregations<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Bishop Omar Guzman who oversees the <a href=\"https:\/\/lmcchurches.org\/2023\/02\/evangelical-garifuna-mission\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Evangelical Garifuna Mission<\/a> is based in NYC and frequently participates with district churches, especially through the NYC Mennonite Council.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The LMC Mission<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The District promotes the LMC mission and identity among the churches:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>A Spirit-led movement to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Make disciples of Jesus,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mobilize every member as a missionary, and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Multiply faith communities locally and beyond!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Participation<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Camp participates with the District in a supportive role to extend and empower each leader&rsquo;s ministry, in two key ways: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li> providing hospitality and space for reflection, renewal, and fellowship for individuals and congregations through Personal <a href=\"https:\/\/campdeerpark.org\/es\/kb\/retreats\/\" target=\"_self\" title=\"Since camp was first purchased, weekend retreats have been a constant source of enjoyment for congregations from New York City. The first retreat at camp was held in May of 1969. Camp hosted the youth groups from the city churches, with about 70 youth attending. Glad Tidings Mennonite Church held the first church retreat in July 1969. Retreats allow congregations to slow down from the busyness of their normal New York City schedule and take the time to deepen their relationships. &ldquo;It&rsquo;s different than when you see people each week.
