Firewood

Firewood is used by Camp Deerpark for campfires and heating via the Wood Doctor Outdoor Wood Boiler (OWB). It is sources from Standing Deadwood and TSI Trees (Timber Stand Improvement) found and flagged by Maintenance or Forestry Stewardship Team personnel. Typically, the wood for heating is cut, hauled in, split and stacked by youth & adult Volunteer Groups in the Fall and Winter and stored in the Wood Doctor cover connected to The Sugar Shack. Campfire wood may be made from construction sources or brought in by Volunteers or Maintenance personnel.

Information and Specifications

  • Storage for Heat Wood: the Wood Doctor cover on The Sugar Shack — main area 11.5′ x 32′ x 8′ (3585 c.f.); alcove 20′ x 4′ x 8′ (640 c.f.) = 28 cords (1 cord = 8′ x 4′ x 4′ / 128 c.f. / ~1200 pcs). Additional or seasoning wood can be stored in piles in the yard areas around the cover.
  • Storage for Campfire Wood: The Wood Shed or outside areas near harvest zones. Check the Drop Barrels in the Woodshop.
  • Usage: Camp uses approx 42 cords of wood for heating per year.
  • Species: heating wood should be mostly hardwood species, though some softwood is acceptable mixed in. Softwood, especially White Pine, is preferred for Campfire wood to reduce burn time after fires and save valuable wood for heating.

Winter: Life Under the Surface
