The Journey Map

The Journey Map is an allegorical framework for Discipleship-Through-Mission that helps groups and individuals:

  • position themselves on their spiritual journey
  • discern what actions are critical
  • learn and practice essential skills
  • manage change towards greater incarnation of Jesus and manifestation of his Kingdom both inwardly into our souls and outwardly into the world.
The Journey Map 1

The Three Lands

The Journey Map 2
the land of

Belonging

Do I feel I have a place with Jesus and his people and do they belong in my story?

Can we be a part of this change, and can this change be a part of our life?

The Journey Map 3
the land of

Becoming

How do I become the person who I want to be in Christ and what is he causing my situation to become?

How can we grow into the kind of people who can bring this change through our unique calling?

The Journey Map 4
the land of

Believing

Where is Jesus leading me to manifest his Kingdom, exercising and demonstrating increasing faith?

Where will we manifest this change for others to experience and to what extent will they take it with them?

The Map includes seven positions and two transition zones.

Applications

Summer Camp: we’re using the first two zones/lands on The Journey Map as a ministry framework for Staff-Counselor Discipleship and Teen Discipleship and Staff Development Discipleship.

Versions

The Minecraft Version: This version was created as a collaborative project by children and teens in the Minecraft adventure video game to illustrate an allegorical understanding to the spiritual journey.

The CDP Journey Map: This 11″x17″ version applies the journey map allegorically to the grounds of Camp Deerpark and the ministry activities and environments they symbolize.

The CDP Journey Map: This 8.5″x14″ version applies the journey map allegorically to the grounds of Camp Deerpark and the ministry activities and environments they symbolize.

Meta

The Journey Map was developed as a tool for discipleship and missional community by the UnusualKingdom community of practice. It was built from the foundation of The Way of Jesus framework for the life and ministry of Jesus, which allegorically identifies key movements for communities and individuals on a spiritual journey. Skills and activities were then developed to contextualize the allegory to missional-discipleship, especially in post-church and post-modern contexts.

The Journey Map is being used as part of Camp Deerpark’s Discipleship & Leadership Development Initiative: life-on-life practice to grow believers to be like Jesus and live advancing the Kingdom by their gifts, so young and old alike are fully empowered to serve Christ at Camp, in the city, and beyond. We use this framework for children’s ministry, staff ministry training, and leadership development.

Story of A Tree

By Ben Cheek | October 18, 2024

A fresh tree stump is like a magnet to me. I have to look at the rings to read the tree’s story. It’s at once humbling to look inside a living thing that is much longer-lived than yourself, but also encouraging to see how it weathered the ups and downs of life, the good times…

Camp’s Political Endorsement

By Ben Cheek | October 15, 2024

I’ve been eligible to vote for 30 years, but – like many in my generation – I’ve never felt like a politician or party truly represented me. They may win me at one point, but they’ll loose me in the next. When I have voted, it always seemed I was going to the polls holding…

Prince of Peace

By Ben Cheek | October 14, 2024

Camp’s mission statement says we offer people the opportunity to fellowship in “serenity”. Serenity literally means “clear skies” — a state of refuge from the storms of the World. Right now, our World does feel pretty stormy with a divided country going into an election and numerous disasters and conflicts abroad and at home. Because…

Mapping Spiritual Journey with NYC Leaders

By Ben Cheek | October 1, 2024

In order to know where you’re going, it’s a good idea to know where you are. One of the best ways to know where you are is a good map. The NYC LMC District is seeing growth in many of our churches right now, and opportunities for re-inventing and re-launching in others. But these are…

How Do You Define Mission?

By Ben Cheek | October 1, 2024

When somebody says “I’m on a mission”, what do you think of? If the word is said in church, what is the first thing that comes to mind? You may think of someone clutching a Bible in a jeep jostling down jungle roads. Or you cold be thinking of a caring staff at an remote…

A Special Request for Baby Vivian

Serving God, while the greatest of blessings, is no guarantee that everything will go well in life. Ben Gosnell came…

You Can Always Come Home

By Ben Cheek | September 12, 2024

In the pursuit of mission, I’ve moved around a lot as an adult. To be perfectly honest, I haven’t found a place since Mom and Dad’s house that I felt was mine — a place I could call home. If you find yourself longing for home, you’re in some pretty good company. It says in…

Map Makers Project

By Ben Cheek | August 29, 2024

Camp is a big place and we have some big plans. But this raises a big question: Just where is everything? In the past, we asked around and maybe somebody would know. Now, we’d like to get all that information down on a map. We’ll use it to maintain the grounds, plan maintenance projects, and…
